Founded In 1871 by two brothers, George and James Weir (descendants of Robert Burns no less), Weir quickly established itself as one of Scotland's leading engineering firms, producing innovative marine pumps and pumping equipment for the world famous Clyde ship-builders.
Over the following 140 years, Weir has diversified into the construction of cars, buses, prefabricated houses, oil pipelines, desalination plants, and armaments as well as being involved in the development of the precursor to the helicopter. All these activities were undertaken while developing its core business of designing and making pumps.
Today Weir employs some 13,000 people in over 70 countries, focusing primarily on the mining, oil and gas and power markets - although it remains heavily involved with the marine industry.
